Kimberly Guilfoyle stepped down as U.S. Ambassador to Greece on Tuesday after the White House asked for her resignation over allegations of improper conduct during her time at the embassy. Her departure caps days of mounting pressure following a series of reports detailing accusations against her.

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced the resignation during a press briefing on Tuesday. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia told reporters.

Trump Signals Displeasure Before Resignation

President Trump, who nominated Guilfoyle to the ambassadorship last year, said Monday that he was “looking” at whether to fire her following a series of Wall Street Journal articles alleging misconduct. His comments came just a day before the White House formally requested her resignation, suggesting the decision had been building for some time.

“We’re not happy,” Trump told reporters, a terse remark that underscored growing frustration within the administration over the allegations swirling around one of its earliest ambassadorial appointments.

That frustration reportedly extended beyond the president himself. A day before Trump’s public comments, the Associated Press, citing a senior U.S. official, reported that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were “extremely pissed off” by Guilfoyle’s reported conduct and would likely decide on her future within the week. The timeline played out almost exactly as described, with her resignation following within days of that report.

Guilfoyle’s exit was not entirely unexpected inside Washington circles. Its possibility had been previewed to the Associated Press over the weekend, giving officials and reporters alike a sense that her tenure in Athens was nearing its end even before the White House made its request public.

Allegations Involve Finances and Diplomacy

The accusations against Guilfoyle, first detailed in Wall Street Journal reporting, are wide-ranging and touch on both her personal finances and her conduct as a diplomat. According to that reporting, Guilfoyle used her influence within the administration to solicit $100,000 from a prominent Trump donor to pay off her American Express card, doing so ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing.

Other allegations reported by the Journal raise separate concerns about her judgment on the job. She is accused of telling a Greek official that the United States could subvert the country’s government if it chose to do so, a remark that, if accurate, would represent a striking breach of diplomatic norms for a sitting U.S. ambassador. The reporting also alleges she gave a private audience to lobbyists from a Greek construction company, raising questions about access and influence at the embassy.

The scrutiny has not been confined to media reporting alone. The State Department’s Office of Inspector General is investigating alleged misconduct by Guilfoyle, according to two officials familiar with the matter. That inquiry adds an official layer of oversight to allegations that had, until now, played out largely in the press.

Guilfoyle Denies Wrongdoing

Guilfoyle has pushed back forcefully against the claims. In a social media post addressing the accusations directly, she said, “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.”

She struck a similarly defiant tone in a separate post on X, framing her departure as a pause rather than an end to her political involvement. “While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” she wrote.

Her denials, however, have not quieted calls from Capitol Hill for accountability. Representative Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called for Guilfoyle to be removed from her post after reports of her misconduct surfaced, adding a partisan dimension to a controversy that had largely unfolded within Republican circles until that point.

A Notable Exit for an Early Trump Appointee

Guilfoyle’s resignation marks a significant turn for a figure who had been closely tied to Trump’s political orbit for years. She was one of the first ambassadors appointed during Trump’s second term, a distinction that placed her among the administration’s earliest diplomatic picks. Before entering government service, she was a Fox News Channel host, giving her a public profile that extended well beyond foreign policy circles. She was also previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., a relationship that further cemented her standing within the former president’s broader political and family network.

Her rise to the ambassadorship in Athens had been seen as a reward for loyalty within Trump’s inner circle, making her abrupt departure all the more notable. The combination of financial allegations, questions about her diplomatic conduct, and an active inspector general investigation leaves unresolved questions about what comes next, both for Guilfoyle personally and for the embassy she leaves behind. For now, the State Department has not detailed who will take over leadership of the embassy in her absence, and the inspector general’s investigation is expected to continue even as she exits her post.
