The dispute has drawn in state regulators, lawmakers, and even the White House, after a Minnesota-based YouTuber raised questions about potential daycare fraud and oversight gaps within the state’s childcare system.
Viral Allegations and the Governor’s Response
The controversy began when Nick Shirley, a Minnesota YouTuber, published a series of videos alleging weaknesses in the state’s monitoring of daycare centers receiving public funds. His reporting quickly gained traction online, amplifying scrutiny of Minnesota’s childcare oversight framework and placing pressure on the Walz administration.
In response, the governor’s office issued a strong rebuttal, saying Walz is committed to preventing fraud and has already taken concrete steps to safeguard public funds. According to a spokesperson, the administration has hired an independent third-party firm to audit payments flowing into what it considers high-risk state programs.

Central to the allegations is a daycare facility highlighted by Shirley, Quality Learning Center, which he says was licensed to admit up to 99 children. Shirley has publicly claimed the center received more than $4 million in state funding and questioned whether proper controls were in place to ensure compliance with licensing and spending rules.
State officials have acknowledged the public concern while disputing aspects of Shirley’s presentation. Tikki Brown, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, said the state takes all allegations of fraud seriously, even if it has concerns about how information was framed in online videos.
Brown stressed that the state’s regulatory system involves continuous inspections, compliance reviews, and enforcement actions — processes that may not always be immediately visible to the public.
Licensing Website Outage Sparks Suspicion
Tensions escalated further when Minnesota’s childcare licensing webpage unexpectedly went offline. A notice from the Minnesota Department of Human Services said the site experienced an unprecedented surge in traffic, causing service disruptions.
The timing of the outage — roughly a week after Shirley’s video went viral — prompted immediate suspicion among critics. Shirley suggested the disruption was not coincidental, publicly questioning whether state officials were attempting to limit access to information.
State authorities denied any wrongdoing, saying the outage was purely technical. According to CBS News, officials visited several daycare centers featured in the videos on December 29. Two of those facilities had already closed earlier in the year, a detail officials said highlights the complexity of tracking enforcement actions across Minnesota’s large and decentralized childcare system.
Political Fallout and National Attention
The dispute has rapidly escalated beyond state politics. While Donald Trump has not commented directly, the White House amplified criticism through a statement from Linda McMahon, who described the situation as “a breathtaking failure” under Walz’s leadership.
Within Minnesota, the website outage itself became a political flashpoint. State Representative Mary Franson shared screenshots of the disruption on X and publicly called on the governor’s office and the Department of Human Services to explain what happened.
The Walz administration maintains that its actions demonstrate transparency and a willingness to address concerns, while critics argue the episode exposes deeper issues in how childcare programs are monitored.
