Ten Killed in Mass Shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach as Bystander Tackles Gunman

SYDNEY, Dec. 14 —

Chaos erupted at Bondi Beach on Saturday evening when two gunmen opened fire near a crowded Hanukkah event, killing at least 10 people and injuring 11 others in one of Australia’s deadliest mass shootings in recent years. The attack prompted a massive police response, terrified beachgoers, and an extraordinary act of bravery from an unarmed bystander who tackled one shooter and seized his rifle.

The shooting began around 6:30 p.m. local time, according to New South Wales Police. Witnesses reported hearing as many as 50 shots as hundreds of people fled across the sand and nearby streets seeking cover.

A 15-second video now circulating widely on social media captured the moment a civilian sprinted from behind parked cars, grabbed one gunman from behind, locked his arm around the man’s neck, and wrestled his rifle away. The gunman collapsed as the civilian turned the firearm toward him, holding him until police arrived.

Authorities confirmed that one of the suspected gunmen was among the dead and the second remained in critical condition. Two additional people are in police custody as officers work to determine their roles.

Gunfire Erupts as Families Gather for Hanukkah Ceremony

Bondi Beach, a major tourist destination, was especially crowded as the Jewish community hosted a seaside Hanukkah event at sunset. Hundreds had gathered for the lighting of the menorah when shots rang out.

Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory condemned the attack as “foreseeable,” accusing the Albanese government of failing to provide adequate security.
“Tonight, many Jews are pondering whether they have a future in Australia,” Gregory said.

While police have not yet indicated a motive, officials say the investigation remains active and are not ruling out any possibilities, including hate-motivated violence.

Police Response and Ongoing Operation

NSW Police first issued a public alert at 2:17 p.m. IST, urging people to avoid the Bondi area and shelter in place. Officers arrived within minutes, securing the scene and detaining two individuals.

“The police operation is ongoing,” NSW Police said later. “Do not cross police lines. Obey all instructions.”

Two police officers are among the 11 injured, authorities said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “shocking and distressing,” acknowledging that first responders were “working to save lives” amid chaos.

“I urge everyone in the area to follow police direction,” Albanese said after speaking with the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier.

Eyewitnesses Describe Panic and Terror

Witnesses described scenes of fear as beachgoers ran for safety, some hiding behind kiosks, others diving under tables or into the surf.

One witness said, “There were people shouting to run, that someone had a gun. It was sheer panic.”

Another recounted hearing “dozens of shots” as people fled toward nearby streets.

With one suspected shooter dead and another critically wounded, investigators are still gathering forensic evidence across a wide area, including the beach, nearby walkways, and parks.

Political Fallout and Security Questions

The attack has revived debates over community safety, extremism, and the capacity of local authorities to protect public gatherings.

Gregory’s statement sharply criticized the Albanese government, calling the shooting “entirely foreseeable.”
“What happened tonight is a tragedy,” he said. “The government failed to protect the Jewish community.”

The Prime Minister rejected claims of negligence but acknowledged that additional national measures may be necessary.

The shooting also comes amid growing tensions globally, with Jewish communities reporting heightened fears and increased security concerns.

Investigation Continues as Beach Remains Under Lockdown

Police have not released the identities of the suspects or victims. The number of casualties is expected to rise, officials warned, as several injured remain in critical condition.

Bondi Beach remains sealed off with a heavy police presence, helicopters overhead, and forensic units sweeping the area.

Authorities have praised the unnamed bystander who disarmed one shooter as likely preventing additional casualties.

“He acted selflessly in a moment of extreme danger,” one senior officer said.

More information is expected as the investigation develops.
