MediaTek and Qualcomm Unveil Next-Gen Mobile Chips

The mobile chip industry is heating up as MediaTek and Qualcomm unveiled their latest flagship processors this week, signaling a new wave of high-performance smartphones. MediaTek introduced the Dimensity 9500, while Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, both promising significant improvements in speed, efficiency, and AI capabilities.


Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 brings a 20% boost in CPU performance alongside a 35% improvement in energy efficiency. GPU performance is up 23%, with 20% better power efficiency and 25% improved ray tracing support.

The Hexagon NPU is 37% faster, and the upgraded Qualcomm Sensing Hub aims to unlock “agentic AI assistants” capable of delivering highly personalized user experiences.

Several smartphones already announced or launching soon will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, including the Xiaomi 17 series, Honor Magic8 series, and Realme GT 8 Pro.


MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500

MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 adopts a new “All Big Core” Arm CPU design. It features a single C1-Ultra core at 4.21GHz, three C1-Premium cores, and four C1-Pro cores in an octa-core layout. Single-core performance is up 32%, multi-core performance rises 17%, while peak efficiency for the ultra core is 55% better. Overall CPU efficiency has improved 30% compared with the Dimensity 9400.

The integrated GPU is 33% faster and 42% more power-efficient. The ninth-generation NPU 990, featuring Generative AI Engine 2.0, delivers 33% faster AI processing. Upcoming devices adopting the Dimensity 9500 include the Oppo Find X9 Pro and vivo X300.


Xiaomi 17 Series

Xiaomi has unveiled three phones in the 17 series, along with two under the 15T moniker, plus the Xiaomi Pad 8, Pad 8 Pro, and Pad Mini. All three 17 series phones use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.

  • Xiaomi 17: 6.3-inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display, triple rear cameras (23mm f/1.7, 60mm f/2.0, 17mm f/2.4), 7,000mAh battery with 100W wired charging.
  • Xiaomi 17 Pro: Front 6.3-inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED, rear 2.7-inch secondary display, triple camera system (23mm f/1.7, 115mm f/3.0 telephoto, 17mm f/2.4 ultrawide), 6,300mAh battery.
  • Xiaomi 17 Pro Max: Front 6.9-inch main display, 2.9-inch rear display, same triple camera setup as the Pro, 7,500mAh battery.

All three devices are launching first in China and are currently available.


Xiaomi 15T Series

The 15T and 15T Pro aim to compete as flagship killers:

  • 15T: 6.83-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, Dimensity 8400 Ultra chip, 5,500mAh battery with 67W wired charging, triple camera system (50MP 23mm wide, 50MP 46mm zoom, 12MP 15mm ultrawide).
  • 15T Pro: 6.83-inch 144Hz AMOLED display, Dimensity 9400+ chip, 5,500mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, upgraded triple camera (50MP 23mm wide, 50MP 115mm zoom, 12MP ultrawide).

These devices demonstrate MediaTek’s continued focus on high-efficiency, high-performance designs for mid-range and flagship markets.

The launch of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500 sets the stage for a wave of smartphones with improved performance, longer battery life, and AI-enhanced user experiences.
