Search for Missing Mother of “Today” Host Savannah Guthrie Enters Fourth Week
By Harshit
TUCSON, ARIZONA, March 6, 2026 —
The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its fourth week as investigators continue to pursue new leads in a case that has gripped the United States and left the family pleading for answers.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 at her home in the upscale Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson, Arizona. Authorities believe she was abducted from the residence the following morning under suspicious circumstances. She disappeared without her phone and without critical medications, raising serious concerns about her safety.
Since then, federal and local investigators have conducted an extensive search across southern Arizona while reviewing thousands of hours of surveillance footage. Despite weeks of investigation, authorities say they still do not have a clear motive or a primary suspect.
Family Offers $1 Million Reward
As the investigation intensified, Savannah Guthrie and her family announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery.
In an emotional video shared on social media in late February, the television host appealed directly to the public.
“Somebody knows,” Guthrie said. “We are begging you to please come forward now.”
The family’s reward adds to an existing $100,000 reward offered by the FBI, bringing the total potential reward to $1.2 million.
Alongside the reward announcement, the Guthrie family pledged $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, hoping the attention surrounding the case would also help other families searching for missing loved ones.
Disturbing Evidence Discovered
Investigators have uncovered several troubling pieces of evidence near the home where Nancy Guthrie disappeared.
One of the most significant clues came from doorbell camera footage recorded outside the Tucson property. The footage shows a masked and armed individual approaching the front door and tampering with the camera shortly before the disappearance.
Authorities described the suspect as a male approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build.
Further investigation revealed that the same masked individual may have appeared outside the home on a separate night before the suspected abduction, raising the possibility that the suspect had been surveilling the property.
Law enforcement officials have also identified a backpack carried by the individual in the footage, believed to be an Ozark-brand backpack. Investigators are attempting to trace where the item may have been purchased.
DNA Evidence and Ongoing Investigation
The FBI and local authorities are continuing to analyze forensic evidence collected from the scene.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that DNA samples recovered from gloves found about two miles from Guthrie’s home did not match DNA collected inside the residence. The samples also produced no matches in the national criminal DNA database known as CODIS.
Investigators say teams are carefully reviewing thousands of hours of surveillance video from across the Tucson metropolitan area to identify vehicles or individuals who may have been near the property around the time of the disappearance.
Federal prosecutors and FBI agents also visited the property in late February as part of the ongoing investigation.
Savannah Guthrie Returns Briefly to “Today”
On March 5, Savannah Guthrie briefly returned to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, home of NBC’s Today show, for an emotional visit with colleagues.
During the visit, Guthrie embraced fellow anchors and thanked them for their support during what she described as the most difficult period of her life.
“Thank you for caring about my mom as much as I do,” she told colleagues.
Although she has been absent from the program while assisting in the search, Guthrie said she intends to eventually return to the show.
“I don’t know how to come back, but I don’t know how not to,” she said. “You’re my family.”
Investigators Say Family Not Suspects
Authorities have emphasized that Nancy Guthrie’s adult children and their spouses are not suspects in the investigation.
Sheriff Nanos publicly dismissed speculation about the family’s involvement, calling such accusations “cruel” and urging the public to focus on helping investigators locate Nancy Guthrie.
Officials continue to believe she was removed from the home against her will, but they have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person may have been involved.
A Community Waiting for Answers
The disappearance has shaken residents in the quiet Catalina Foothills neighborhood where Nancy Guthrie lived.
Neighbors have placed flowers and messages outside the home while offering support to the Guthrie family. Law enforcement officers have repeatedly canvassed the area, asking residents for surveillance footage dating back to January 1 in an effort to track suspicious activity.
Authorities also coordinated with U.S. Border Patrol and Mexican law enforcement agencies to determine whether Nancy Guthrie could have been taken across the border. So far, officials in the Mexican state of Sonora say there is no evidence suggesting she entered Mexico.
As the search enters its fourth week, investigators continue to follow tips submitted to federal and local authorities.
For the Guthrie family, however, the uncertainty remains agonizing.
In one emotional message posted online, Savannah Guthrie acknowledged the painful possibility that her mother may no longer be alive — but said the family still needs answers.
“She may already be gone,” Guthrie said. “But we need to know where she is.”
