Protests Erupt Nationwide After ICE Shooting in Minneapolis as FBI Takes Over Probe

MINNEAPOLIS, JAN. 9, 2026 — 8 AM EDT
Outrage is mounting across the United States after a federal immigration agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis, triggering protests, vigils, and renewed scrutiny of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics.

The woman, Renee Nicole Good, 37, was killed during an encounter with agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday. The incident has become a flashpoint in a broader national debate over the use of force by federal officers during immigration operations.

FBI Assumes Control of Investigation

Amid growing calls for transparency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the shooting. However, the move has itself drawn controversy.

Minnesota officials said a state agency was blocked from accessing key investigative materials after initial plans for a joint federal–state probe collapsed. According to multiple reports, federal authorities reversed course over concerns that information could be leaked and that the safety of ICE agents might be compromised.

State officials, meanwhile, have questioned whether federal investigators can remain impartial, citing public statements by President Donald Trump and senior administration figures who described Good as a “domestic terrorist” before the investigation concluded.

Protests and Vigils Spread

Demonstrations erupted in Minneapolis and quickly spread to other cities, as hundreds gathered for marches, candlelight vigils, and moments of silence.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for a statewide moment of unity, urging residents to honor Good through peaceful acts of service. Protests also disrupted major events, including a professional basketball game where a moment of silence was observed in her memory.

Late-night demonstrations saw federal officers deploy pepper balls to disperse crowds near federal buildings, further inflaming tensions between local residents and federal authorities.

Pattern of Fatal ICE Encounters

According to the Associated Press, Good is at least the fifth person known to have died during immigration enforcement operations since Trump returned to the White House.

Previous cases include:

  • A man who died after fleeing an immigration raid in southern California and running onto a freeway.
  • A farmworker who fell to his death during an ICE operation at a greenhouse.
  • A man fatally shot during an ICE traffic stop after allegedly resisting arrest.

The Department of Homeland Security has defended its agents, saying officers are facing increasing threats while enforcing federal law. DHS officials have praised the agent involved in the Minneapolis shooting as a veteran officer and warned against what they described as “smearing” federal personnel.

Separate Border Patrol Shooting in Portland

The Minneapolis case was followed within 24 hours by another shooting involving federal agents, this time in Portland.

Officials said U.S. Border Patrol agents fired into a vehicle during a “targeted stop,” wounding a married couple. The Department of Homeland Security claimed agents acted after the driver attempted to run them over.

The wounded pair was taken to hospital, and no federal agents were reported injured. DHS alleged the couple was linked to Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang frequently cited by the Trump administration, though no evidence was publicly released.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting the FBI in the Portland investigation, while Oregon’s attorney general has launched a parallel state inquiry to determine whether federal agents exceeded their legal authority.

Political and Cultural Fallout

The twin incidents have intensified criticism from Democratic leaders and civil rights groups, who argue that aggressive federal tactics are undermining public safety and trust.

Public figures have also weighed in. Poet Amanda Gorman posted a widely shared poem honoring Renee Good, describing the grief and unrest that followed her death. Comedian John Mulaney postponed Minneapolis performances, citing safety concerns amid the unrest.

As investigations continue, the shootings have deepened an already fraught national conversation about immigration enforcement, federal authority, and accountability — with no clear resolution in sight.
