Democrats Push ACA Subsidies Amid Shutdown

Trump’s Influence on the Shutdown Fight
Former President Donald Trump’s role has added uncertainty to the ACA subsidies government shutdown. On Monday night, Trump posted on social media:
“I’m happy to work with Democrats on their failed healthcare policies, or anything else, but first they must allow our Government to reopen.”
This statement contradicted earlier signals of active negotiation, leaving leaders uncertain about his stance. Senate Minority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., suggested that Trump’s influence would shape the GOP’s position: “There may be a path forward, but it depends on where the White House lands on this.”
Bipartisan Glimmers of Hope
Despite tensions, some lawmakers see room for compromise on the ACA subsidies government shutdown. Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., has proposed a one-year extension with a gradual phaseout, while Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested tying bipartisan spending bills to a delayed discussion of ACA subsidies.
Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine expressed frustration, supporting a Republican proposal to reopen the government while warning that Democrats need “real evidence” Republicans are willing to address health care.
